New York Rangers become first NHL team to clinch a playoff spot in 2023-24
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

With a 6-5 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, the New York Rangers became the first team in the NHL to clinch a playoff spot in 2023-24.

The Flyers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period with goals from Scott Laughton and Ryan Poehling. Mika Zibanejad cut the deficit with a power play goal before the end of the period. The Rangers got two quick goals from Jonny Brodzinski and Alexis Lafreniere before Travis Konecny tied it with his 31st goal of the season.

The two teams exchanged goals to close out the third period, with Lafreniere scoring his second of the game and Vincent Trocheck scoring for New York and Owen Tippett and Tyson Foerster scoring for Philadelphia.

Just over 30 seconds into overtime, Adam Fox scored his 15th of the season to give the Rangers the playoff-clinching goal.

With the win, the Rangers are 48-20-4 with 100 points, leading the Metropolitan Division. They are currently three points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes in the division.

They are the first team in the league to reach the 100-point mark this season.

Their next game is Thursday on the road against the Colorado Avalanche, then they head to Arizona to take on the Coyotes.

Last season, the Rangers went 47-22-13 with 107 points, but were eliminated by the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the playoffs. They fired head coach Gerard Gallant and hired Peter Laviolette in the summer. Now in his 22nd season as a head coach, he has a record of 800-523-25 in 1,502 career games with the Rangers, Flyers, Washington Capitals, Nashville Predators, Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders.
